Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo both changing how they play

He still has the freedom to play wherever he wants, but he has benefitted from a greater intensity in training at Barcelona and also from the team being more organised. Under Luis Enrique, Barcelona pressure higher up the pitch, they distribute the ball more quickly and there is a lot of movement off the ball. All of that is helping Messi’s decision-making. Previously, he was looking to play around the penalty area and to score goals, but he has now taken a few steps back and you’re more likely to see him in the number 10 position. He’s not just a number 10 because he appears everywhere, but he is enjoying his assists as much as his goals now. He has provided six assists and scored three goals this season, so he has contributed to a 75% of Barcelona’s 12 goals so far. It has taken a while to realise that a 27-year-old body is different to a 21-year-old body. This is an evolution that had been predicted by everybody around him, but he needed to see it and he needed to feel that’s what his body can give him. After what happened at the World Cup – when perhaps his performances weren’t praised as much as he deserved because Argentina’s system didn’t benefit him at all – he has decided to take a couple of steps towards becoming the “new” Lionel Messi. We are seeing the same situation with Cristiano Ronaldo. We will never again see the winger that we used to see flying down the flanks at Old Trafford or in his first few years at Real Madrid; he is now a player that plays up front with freedom. Sometimes he plays on the left wing and lately we have seen him on the right wing a lot, joining in with Gareth Bale. He also plays as a number nine next to Karim Benzema and you also see him dropping deep to play a part in the build-up. The new Real Madrid accumulates bodies in the centre and a lot is built around the combinations of James Rodriguez, Toni Kroos, Luka Modric, Karim Benzema, Sergio Ramos… and also Ronaldo. That’s an evolution from his usual way of playing. He can accept the limitations of his body as long as he remains important to the team – and he is still very important, albeit in a different way. We started to see some of those changes last season, but it was partly down to physical problems. Now you can see he has accepted his physical limitations – he still hasn’t recovered 100% from his patellar tendon problems – and he is going to change the way he plays.

Manchester City 1-1 Chelsea: Lampard haunts his former club and 4 other things we saw at the Etihad

Jose Mourinho likes to keep things tight when his Chelsea side visit their rivals - and so it was again today for most of the game. Last season, the Blues performed a smash-and-grab to win by a single goal at the Etihad and they appeared to have repeated the trick today, only to see a former hero cancel out their lead in the 85th minute. After relative disappointment for both teams in the Champions League this week, it was the hosts who started brighter - no doubt feeling they had a point to prove after being out-classed and out-passed for large parts of the evening against Munich on Wednesday. But if that game was primarily a test of their defensive credentials, today's instead presented Manuel Pellegrini's men with an entirely different tactical challenge - that of breaking down a stubborn and well-drilled side while protecting themselves from being hit on the counter attack. They were the more dangerous of the two sides until Pablo Zabaleta saw red, but Chelsea made their man advantage count after Andre Schurrle gave them the lead. Jose Mourinho will be left cursing a moment of lax defending as ten-man City were able to regroup following the goal and it fell to none other than Frank Lampard to do the business against his old club. What did we learn from today's 1-1 draw at the Etihad?

Frank Lampard

Frank Lampard: "I had 13 amazing years with Chelsea - I'm a bit lost for words... I didn't expect to score & for the Chelsea fans to sing..." Yep, Lampard scored for Manchester City FC to deny his old side Chelsea Football Club victory in the Premier League.

Louis van Gaal's Manchester United:10 damning facts

After a 100% win rate in pre-season and a flurry of majorly exciting new recruits, Manchester United fans had every right to feel optimistic about the forthcoming Premier League season. Louis van Gaal was deemed the right man to airbrush the miserable previous 12 months out of the clubs history, leaving the whole David Moyes blunder just a horrible dream that everybody can wake up from. But, after just five league games the same cracks that Mr Moyes kept stumbling over look to be resurfacing as Manchester United slumped to a 5-3 defeat away at newly promoted Leicester City. A lot was made of the constant stream of unwanted records that Moyes consistently claimed during his tenure at Old Trafford but is he LvG doing much better? Here are the 10 facts every Manchester United fan will hate: 1. Leaky at the back Before yesterday Manchester United had never conceded 4 or more goals in a PL game against a newly-promoted side. In fact, even David Moyes never saw United concede more than four in the league. 2. #MoyesIn In his first five games last season David Moyes had accumulated seven league points, Louis van Gaal has only managed five and is sitting 4 positions lower in the table. 3. It's a squad game LvG is taking a leaf out of Fergie's rotational book, Manchester United have used 27 players in the league this season so far - more than any other side in the division. 4. Things can only get better United fans won't need reminding but this has been their worst start to a Premier League season ; two defeats, two draws, one victory, five points. 5. Legacy All Alex Ferguson's hard work disappeared on a Sunday afternoon in Leicester. For the first time in their 853-game Premier League history, Manchester United threw away a two goal lead to lose. 6. Angel's dream ruined After splashing a British record transfer fee of £59.7m big ones on Angel Di Maria, the Argentinian brought with him goals, assists and one amazing statistic... Since playing in Europe, Di Maria has never lost a league game in which he's scored... until yesterday that is. 6. Out Foxed Manchester United had never before conceded more than three goals to a newly-promoted side. 7. He's the Don Manchester United began their League Cup campaign in the second round with some of the football league minnows, but not to worry, they haven't lost to a third tier team since 1995. Oh, 4-0... 8. Swan dive LvG handed a first league win for Swansea at Old Trafford ever. In fact, it's the first opening home game defeat Manchester United have suffered for 42 years. 9. Bore Draw Previously Burnley had never drawn a game 0-0 in their Premier League history. After their stalemate with Manchester United Burnley now had 3 nil-nil draws in a row. 10. Take me home It is the first time in 13 years Manchester United have gone 5 away games without a win.

Liverpool star Mario Balotelli racially abused on Twitter after mocking Manchester United's 5-3 defeat at Leicester...

Mario Balotelli was racially abused on Twitter today after he mocked Manchester United's 5-3 defeat at Leicester City. Hate-filled social media users targeted the Liverpool and Italy striker after he goaded the Red Devils fans with a tweet which simply read: 'Man utd ... LOL.' One vile tweeter, known only as iMonko, wrote: "Monkey, monkey, monkey, monkey, monkey." Another, using the Twitter handle Maroc, tweeted: "You're a f*****g monkey. Oo Oo ah ah." And one particularly disgusting tirade read: "@F**k you Mario you f*****g n****r. Go eat some bananas and get ebola you dirty monkey." Many others came to Balotelli's defence and some screengrabbed and re-tweeted some of the vile messages, and forwarded them on to police. The football equality group Kick It Out said in a message on Twitter that it was aware of the racist tweets directed bat Balotelli and that it would be reporting the matter to the authorities. Merseyside Police has since said it is investigating. The force posted a message on Twitter, which read: "We can confirm officers are looking into offensive comments made on Twitter about Mario Balotelli earlier today." Asked if they were launching an investigation, a Merseyside Police spokesman said "yes, we are", adding: "As far as I am aware there have been no complaints but we have been made aware of it by a number of press inquiries." Manchester United led 3-1 at half-time before conceding four second-half goals in 21 minutes against newly-promoted Leicester. Balotelli was joined by others from across the world of football left in disbelief at United’s latest horror show. Former Arsenal midfielder and Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson said: "Man Utd a Gillion miles away from winning the title." TV presenter and Arsenal fan Piers Morgan tweeted: "To be fair to Van Gaal, he has brought in a new era at United - they're worse than I've ever seen them."

How do Arsenal fit in Mesut Ozil at No.10?

What a difference a year makes. Last September Mesut Ozil was Arsenal's new super star having arrived from Real Madrid for £42m and was dazzling fans and pundits alike. Now he is struggling for form and drawing criticism from supporters. Arsene Wenger has pleaded with Gooners not to make the German World Cup winner "a scapegoat". Gunners fans aren't happy with Wenger either for playing the stuttering Arsenal star on the left, with many supporters sure this is the reason the attacker is struggling. So how could Arsenal build a team around Ozil at No.10? They have a host of midfield stars, who who would have to play where in the re-jig? We asked Arsenal fans to come up formations with Ozil in the hole. We also suggested a few of our own, with Jack Wilshere moving out wide left, a position Wenger has suggested he could play. We didn't pick Mathieu Debuchy, Calum Chambers or Theo Walcott due to injury; the idea being to get Ozil into No.10 role for this weekend!

Man United keen on Cristiano Ronaldo transfer next summer and Kevin Strootman swoop in January

Van Gaal confirming interest in Old Trafford old boy tallies with club insiders' belief a deal is possible PLUS: Roma value midfielder at £46m to try to scare Reds off
Louis van Gaal has admitted Manchester United want to bring Cristiano Ronaldo back to the Premier League. United spent £151.3million this summer, and are ready to make another major statement of intent with a megabucks move to re-sign Ronaldo from Real Madrid at the end of this campaign. And the Old Trafford giants are also ready to open the chequebook again in January for Roma star Kevin Strootman - new boss Van Gaal’s top midfield target - despite having been told they will have to fork out £46m to land him. Van Gaal, questioned on Friday over a potential move for Ronaldo, said: “When it is possible, as I said with [£6m single-season loan signing Radamel] Falcao, players like Ronaldo give a lot extra to the team.” Ronaldo left United for the Spanish capital in 2009 for a then-world record fee of £80m, but is said to have become fed up with life at the Bernabeu. The Red Devils have been alerted to the Portuguese superstar’s perceived discontent by former Real president Ramon Calderon, who claimed the 29-year-old was ready to move again.

Yaya Toure hits back at ''dirty'' Paul Scholes after Champions League criticism

Under fire: Toure has been criticised heavily but has now taken the time to respond Yaya Toure has hit back at Paul Scholes after the former Manchester United man criticised him earlier this week. The Manchester City midfielder's defensive contribution was called into question after a lacklustre display against Bayern Munich in the Champions League in midweek. "The amount of time I saw opponents get in behind him in the game in Munich was quite remarkable," Scholes wrote in the Independent. "He just did not look interested. Alongside him, Fernandinho is having to do the work of two players defensively and against Bayern that was always going to cause City problems." But upon hearing the criticism the big Ivorian has bitten back claiming Scholes has gone from being a "good guy" to "a bit dirty". “We never hear something about Paul Scholes when he was a player, but now he is starting to talk," he said on Football Focus.

Boateng burns former club as Bayern Munich defeat Man City

Jerome Boateng scored a late goal to give Bayern Munich a 1-0 win on Wednesday night over Manchester City -- and break his former employer’s hearts in the process. The win for the Bavarian giants was hardly undeserved -- but after a stellar show from Joe Hart inbetween the City posts and a dogged performance for nearly 90 minutes, Boateng’s late goal was a cruel one indeed. Boateng of course famously washed out at City, appearing in just 16 games for the club before being shipped to Germany after two freak accidents -- one involving an airline drinks cart -- that left him with serious knee damage. But he has always been a quality player and he was the man on the spot when City’s rearguard action finally collapsed on Wednesday night. Collecting a rebound from Claudio Pizzaro's attempt at the top of the box wide left, Boateng settled and then lashed a drive that grazed the back of teammate Mario Goetze, spinning away from Hart at full stretch to fluff the net at the far post. The play had started when City, for once, had failed to clear the danger off a set piece, and with the ball bouncing madly about, Lewandowski’s awareness was enough to create the chance. Boateng’s finish, it must be said, was exquisite. It is a curio that Roma are actually leading Group E after they pasted CSKA Moscow 5-1 as neither of those teams are up to the class shown on Wednesday night. Manchester City are in third, with Bayern just above them in second on goal difference. If we’re honest, this was always Bayern’s game to lose. Now, Bayern had a lot of absentees; Bastian Schweinsteiger and Franck Ribery were looking on in street clothes, and Arjen Robben was reduced to the bench with a knee ailment. One Citizen was also reduced to watching from the director’s boxes: Manuel Pellegrini was serving the second of his two-game suspension for criticizing the referee after City’s loss to Barcelona last season. But if the Bavarians were missing and firepower, they certainly didn’t show it, with Thomas Muller almost scoring off the kickoff when Goetze slipped him through. His shot would hit side net -- a recurring theme in the half for Bayern -- but it was a real wakeup call for City, and a taste of what was yet to come: Unrelenting pressure In short order, Muller would then force a fine, one-handed save from Joe Hart in the 20th minute, ghosting into space to meet Juan Bernat’s service. On the ensuing corner, Goetze would get a shot off that was well-saved by Hart, but not until it took a big deflection off the elbow of Vincent Kompany. Bayern were incensed that Spanish referee Alberto Mallenco didn’t point to the spot, but he would manage a generally hands-off game that consistently let plays develop. City’s forays were rare, but when they came, they had a bit of bite. Edin Dzeko was allowed time and space and sent his shot whizzing across the face of Manuel Neuer’s goal, just missing the far post. But the problem was that Fernandinho and Yaya Toure were unable to truly come to grips with Bayern’s swarming formation. With Josep Guardiola showing three at the back and then rotating his squad to overload the flanks, too often City’s fulcrums were left exposed and wanting. David Alaba would prove the point as he motored all the way upfield to force not one but two smart saves out of Hart virtually unimpeded. And Robert Lewandowski, who has been quieter than expected since his move to Bayern, was unlucky to be flagged offside at least once, and even unluckier to shoot a good chance late in the half into the side net. The second half saw the ineffective Samir Nasri yanked for James Milner, and City gradually grow into the game. But City's midfield was overwhelmed so often that you had to feel a goal was coming sooner than later. Except, well, it didn’t, and as time ticked off you did start to wonder if the Sky Blues actually might escape Germany with a point. Hart was kept quite busy, diving here and there to stop Goetze and Muller, and Boateng before he scored; City’s only real chance came when it appeared that David Silva had been chopped down by Mehdi Benatia in a clumsy fashion in the box. The referee took a hard look at it, but then waved play on. He would do the same when substitute Arjen Robben dove rather theatrically, but the difference there was that Robben hadn’t even been touched, and has a reputation that precedes him.

What's wrong with Mesut Ozil? Why doesn't Wenger give the Arsenal star a chance in his best position?

What's the deal with Ozil? The German has been woeful lately for Arsenal The man on the public address system at Dusseldorf airport hit the‎ nail on the head. They called Mr Ozil's name because ‎he had gone missing and his flight was closing. Oh, the irony. It is becoming a familiar question: what has happened to Mesut Ozil and has anyone seen him lately? Arsenal signed Ozil on deadline day last summer for £42m and in doing so they bought one of the best players in the world. Even Jose Mourinho hailed him as the best No10 in the world. So, why oh why, doesn't Arsene Wenger play him there? Ozil has been used wide left and wide right this season but has been largely anonymous in both roles. He has been hugely disappointing. Arsene Wenger has favoured a new 4-1-4-1 formation to help squeeze all his players into midfield, from Alexis Sanchez to Jack Wilshere, it's a way of cramming them all in. But it tends to leave the one in front of the back four - largely Mikel Arteta - exposed and carrying the flak from the fans. The supporters are turning on Arteta in an ugly way. But Ozil also cannot really play in the middle of that four and his talents are wasted wide so I do feel sympathy for the German playmaker. He's not at his best and Arsenal aren't helping get the best out him.

From footballer to WWE wrestler, Will Tim Wiese make the drastic career change?

It's not particularly unusual to see professional multi-sportsman, occasionally footballers take a different career path and pursue another sport but it's safe to say Tim Wiese is a little bit different. Tim Wiese made over 300 German League appearances in goal for teams like Werder Bremen and Hoffenheim before his contract expired in January at the age of 32. Being released, an unemployed free agent is a difficult time for any footballer, especially one that has played at the highest possible level having earned six caps for the German national side. Arguably one of the biggest obstacles facing a sportsman during their time in the wilderness is maintaining the required level of fitness capable of convincing a club to take you on... Tim Wiese does not have that problem. Having hit the gym, Wiese is now an absolute giant, a giant that has now been offered a contract to join the WWE as a professional wrestler, he told Blind: "I have an official enquiry from the WWE, it's about working for them as a wrestler. I will listen. "I don't s**t my pants, why should I immediately say no? Wrestling is very popular, especially in the States. I will go through the enquiry with my agent next week." To be fair, he's a big fella:

Jose Mourinho warns Chelsea

Chelsea manager, Jose Mourinho, has warned his players that the club simply cannot afford to drop down to the Europa League this season. The Blues advanced all the way to the semi-finals last season, until they were beaten by Spanish champions, Atletico Madrid, but the season before that, they were knocked out of the Champions League at the group stage, after finishing third, and Mourinho has told his players they cannot slip up this season. Mourinho has lifted the Champions League trophy two times, once with FC Porto and once with Inter Milan, and despite having a relatively easy group, the Portuguese manager has said getting knocked out is unthinkable for the club. "The competition is part of my history and I'm part of the tournament's history. To win with three clubs would be unique," said Mourinho. "Do I want to try to win again? Of course I want to. "I have many years ahead of me. But in this moment I only think: don't play Europa League. "It would be very bad for the evolution of our players to go to Europa League. "We have to qualify. We have to do everything to qualify." Chelsea face Schalke at Stamford Bridge tomorrow night, whilst Sporting Lisbon take on NK Maribor in the other game of the group

Jose Mourinho confirms Hazard talks

Chelsea boss admits contract talks are ongoing Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has revealed that contract talks are ongoing with midfielder, Eden Hazard. The 23-year-old has become one of the world's top players during his time at Stamford Bridge, and he has voiced his desire to extend his stay, despite being linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain throughout the Summer. When talking about the Hazard saga, Mourinho said: "We have big hopes that he will go from a top player to reach higher levels. "He's a player we want to keep. It's true Chelsea is trying to have an agreement for a new contract. "It will be a question of time. It will end with a new contract. "He wants to commit to us and we want to commit to him for the future." Hazard may also be joined by Gary Cahill who is set to sign a new lucrative deal.

Ronaldo return to Manchester United possible, says Gary Neville

The former Red Devils star believes the work his club has done in the transfer market this summer could help attract the Real Madrid superstar back to Old Trafford Gary Neville believes Manchester United's summer transfer splurge means the prospect of Cristiano Ronaldo making a return to Old Trafford is "more possible". Ronaldo is reportedly unhappy at Real Madrid, with the club's decision to sell both Angel di Maria and Xabi Alonso believed to be among the biggest causes of his frustration. MAN UTD LATEST 5/1 Cristiano Ronaldo is 5/1 with bet365 to score a hat-trick against BaselRumours have subsequently resurfaced of a possible return to United, who spent over £150 million to recruit Di Maria, Ander Herrera, Luke Shaw, Daley Blind, Marcos Rojo and Radamel Falcao in a bid to make an instant return to the Premier League's top four. And former United defender Neville admits the Red Devils are now closed to being in a position to attract Ronaldo back to Old Trafford. "You'd have to say that with what they've done with Di Maria and Falcao it's more possible, it has to be, because they've shown the real intent to go and sign world-class players," Neville said on Sky Sports ' 'Monday Night Football'. "We sat here three or four months ago deliberating over whether Manchester United could attract world-class talent. They've absolutely smashed that question out of the water and if they get him." "There was talk last summer that it was either going to be Cristiano Ronaldo or Gareth Bale and there are rumours of Cristiano not being happy in Madrid. "Obviously last year they won the Champions League, so has he achieved what he wanted to achieve in Madrid? Has he done what he set out to do? That's question one. "Does he love Manchester? Does he love United? Yes, absolutely. He has talked more and more in the last 12 to 18 months about how he misses Old Trafford. "The reception he got there and the way the fans reacted towards him, I've not seen that for many players. Eric Cantona and him were incredible reactions from the fans every single week. "It was almost like an incredible belief in the stadium every time he played."

Cristiano Ronaldo return to Manchester United is 'in place'

The 29-year-old swapped Old Trafford for Real Madrid in a £80million deal more than five years ago, but speculation has mounted that he could be set for a return to play under Louis van Gaal. Newspaper reports have suggested the Ballon D’Or winner is unhappy with Real Madrid’s transfer policy and wants to play again for the club he represented between 2003 and 2009. And Balague told Revista de La Liga that a deal is likely with finance not an issue for Manchester United. "I have a pretty good idea of when he wants to go. It won’t be this month or next month, but he wants to go back to Manchester United and everything is in place." Guillem Balague Balague said: “He is unhappy and he’s said so – but then he corrected himself by saying ‘I didn’t mean what he said’. It was a bit confusing. “Anyway, you have to say he’s not happy that Ozil left and he didn’t like the fact that Xabi Alonso and Di Maria left. “He has this idea, I think, that at Real Madrid he is doing a job and he is working, but he enjoyed himself almost like a kid at Manchester United.
